I really hate doing this at this time of year, but since the Brewers appear to be well out of playoff contention, it got me thinking about where they stood for the 2010 draft. I have already been writing some stories over at PG Crosschecker about some of the top players available next year, with the Aflac All-American classic being played last weekend, pretty much the last of the major high school summer showcase/tournament events, and the summer collegiate leagues coming to an end.

The RayThe Rays confirmed the signings of four high draft picks: No. 3 OF Todd Glaesmann, No. 4 C Luke Bailey, No. 5 1B Jeff Malm and No. 9 LHP Kevin James.

According to Baseball America, they spent freely in doing so, giving Glaesmann $930,000, which would be the third-highest bonus in the third round and more than three times the MLB recommendation for that slot (108th overall).

On the Florida State football site, they still have Richardson on their roster and talk about him possibly starting at quarterback? Did he truly sign with the Brewers, on the MLB site, he is not listed as having signed or the Brewer site.

Just got back from Omaha... I talked to Khris in Omaha after they were eliminated on Monday afternoon. He said he WAS signing with the Brewers and that his college career was over. It was pretty cool I had to wait for him and the rest of the team to come to their bus and drop off equipment. Stephen Strasburg, meet Bryce Harper (2010 draft)

I'm not sure how many of you have followed, or even heard of, the development of high school sophomore sensation Bryce Harper, a player who a year ago was pegged as the easy top pick available for the 2011 draft, and one that might have given Strasburg a run for his money as the #1 overall pick this year.

As Allan Simpson reports, Harper is going to forego his final two years in high school to enter junior college and be eligible next spring for the 2010 draft.

The 'strategy' of holding out and playing indy ball

If I understand correctly there are two players in this years draft pool who were drafted last year and did not sign and are now in Indy leagues, those players being Aaron Crow and Tanner Scheppers. I can only presume that they were drafted last year, were offered 'slot' value and turned it down, hoping to play Indy ball for a year and to cash in this year. I have to say, if that is the case, I really have to question the logic behind that.

BP's Kiley McDaniel is reporting that the Brewers are, along with the Giants and Indians, favorites to sign the 6'4"/195 Pena. He's being compared to Jermaine Dye and Juan Gonzalez and wowed the scouts last month in a showcase against the Canadian Junior National Team...

#39 Kyle Heckathorn RHP - I have to get a closer look at a guy with this much power stuff, plus a good change-up

Wisconsin College Baseball slowly dying

Madison, River Falls and Eau Claire are already without teams and now UW-La Crosse has announced it is pulling the plug on its college program. This is really unfortunate as it will have an affect on the remaining WIAC teams, such as Whitewater, Oshkosh and Point.

Not a good trend.
