Jeffress & Sheets pitching on the same day.
It just doesn't get anymore exciting than that. |

Actually, it's even better with Anundsen starting too. Evan is quietly putting together a very, very nice season at WV and is certainly worth following. |

Michael Brantley of the Stars is dealing with a right ankle sprain; no word on its severity, if it was one of those infamous "high"
ankle sprains, he likley would have been placed on the DL by now.
Speaking of injuries, hopefully I wasn't too over the top concerning the Helena roster Saturday. While no one in the Brewer organization could have foreseen five position players going down with leg-related injuries (what's in the water in Montana?), it is past time for a little help to backfill, and to give the remaining healthy players an occasional day off in their transition to Pioneer League play. |

Speaking of injuries, hopefully I wasn't too over the top concerning the Helena roster Saturday I don't think you were, as these types of problems have plagued Reid Nichols for years. Nichols also allowed Braddock to start on 3 days rest yesterday. Having prospects play injured, starting pitchers DH, and pitchers start on 3 days rest is rediculous if avoidable. Nichols already lost some of his responsibilities, but it looks like he still has too many. He was also part of the decision to not let Michael Brantley play CF until this year, another bone headed move. Nichols doesn't really have a positive, as the biggest part of player development he could impact is defense, and all the prospects he was in charge of are wretched defensively despite having worthwhile tools.

Joel Morales is on the mound today for the Baby Brewers. Pitching for the Rangers is 2007 first round draft choice Michael Main.

Minor league teams often run low on bodies. That's the way it is, as there isn't a magical reserve team somewhere to draw from.
The minors are for developing major league players, so to be upset a SS is playing RF for a day or two is far from a problem. |

The minors are for developing major league players, so to be upset a SS is playing RF for a day or two is far from a problem. Where has someone complained about a non-prospect playing out of position? The minors in for developing major leaguers, than why did non prospects like Moss and Caufield play CF ahead of Brantley? Why is Chris Dennis risking further injury and important development time playing injuried? Why is Braddock, and Sarafate among others in the past, pitching on 3 days rest? Minor league teams often run low on bodies. That's the way it is, as there isn't a magical reserve team somewhere to draw from. Well, except the 7 other affiliates. Also, the minor league 7 day DL is there to try to protect young players from the laziness of guys like Nichols. To add some good news, Jeffress scoreless threw 4, it sounded like Brent Brewer just helped him out with a nifty play.

Nice game for Lorenzo Cain so far, with a homer and double. He's gotta be praying hard for the Sabathia trade to go through so he can get moved up to
Huntsville where he belongs.

3 days rest after only pitching 3 innings his last start. I assume they probably have a number of prescribed innings they'd like a prospect to get to each
year and are trying to get them back on that #.

Well, except the 7 other affiliates
6 minor league teams, so 5 other teams. They are all there to develop players for the bigs. The concern seems to be poor Helena, playing with only 9 or 10 position players...who cares? Stressing out over stuff like that is a complete waste of time. I don't care if they win a game all year, I just hope they have a few guys in the majors in 5 years. |

dadofandrew wrote: I would agree that the minor leagues are about development. That being said, what's the point in unnecessary risk? I want players to progress and stay
healthy... I don't see how either of those things are happening in Helena at this point. That squad was going to be thin with all of the pitchers
drafted, no one would have predicted the injuries, but something has to be done to protect the kids. I'm a pretty unsympathetic man, that probably comes
from being around football my whole life. Injuries are a part of sports. However, why put further risk to the young men when you can easily slide a couple of
position players around for a week? It temporarily makes the rosters of 3 clubs thin, but it also helps relieve the burden from Helena staff and players.

Al, I think one point you are missing is that the organization is risking Chris Dennis' health by having him play injured due to the lack of bodies.
That's not good for player development no matter how you look at it.
I will say that it is easier said than done to fill in the holes, as getting hit so hard by injuries in such a short amount of time (not to mention at the beginning of the Pioneer League season when the team is still being put together) is certainly difficult to manage, and Arizona only has four outfielders that are playing regularly.
I was saying boo-urns

To be fair to the brewers, if guys are likely day-to-day, it would be a waste (in their minds) to buy plane tickets and rent hotel rooms for players, sending
them back and forth to affiliates just to keep full benches. To send guys from AZ-Helena without purchasing tickets in advance is likely $1000 roundtrip,
throwing in hotel costs, etc. The Brewers would probably rather let a former stud hitter like Romanowski (sp?) DH than send an overwhelmed AZ leaguer to
Montana for 4 days and $1600 in expenses.

Its kind of funny when you look at Mat Gamel's line and see 5 for 5 and have a reaction of "eh".
