Posts: 13297 June 5, 2009 9:01 PM Graphic Artist / Dir of Amateur Baseball Ops	ROUND 1: Eric Arnett - RHP - SIGNED 6'5", 230, R/R, Indiana University (Indiana) BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Arnett is an extremely athletic, tall and well built right-handed pitcher whose stock has soared this spring with improved stuff and results. Prior to this year, he worked both out of the Hoosiers bullpen and starting rotation, topping out in the low-90s. He responded this year consistently showing a 91-95 fastball creeping to the 96-97 range on occasion. He gained momentum as the season progressed, on his way to a way to a 12-2 season with a 2.50 ERA in which he was named co-Big Ten pitcher of the year. He struck out 109 batters in 108 innings of work, giving up 82 hits and allowing 39 walks. What most impressed scouts was how well he maintained his velocity deep into ballgames, and saved one of his best performances for one of his last, tosses a gem versus Purdue in the Big Ten championship. In addition to his fastball, he throws a wicked slider that he is able to add and subtract off of. The mid-80s version of the pitch is a swing and miss pitch that bites hard, down and away from right-handed batters. He can take a little off and throw a low-80s version to drop the pitch in the zone. His changeup needs some work, and some question his mechanics, leading some to believe a future move to the bullpen may occur. However, with two good pitches and command, along with his athleticism and the way he maintains his velocity deep into games, I'm sure the Brewers think nothing of Arnett other than a future starter. Posts: 13298 June 5, 2009 9:02 PM Graphic Artist / Dir of Amateur Baseball Ops	ROUND 1S-a: Kentrail Davis - OF - SIGNED 5'9", 195, L/R, University of Tennessee (Tennessee) BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Davis is a pure, gifted hitter and overall offensive player that entered the spring as one of the best overall hitters available for the 2009 draft. A lingering wrist injury and a hamstring injury may have limited Davis' production during his sophomore year at Tennessee, although he still had a strong season. He was named a freshman all-american in 2008, and played for Team USA last summer. His troublesome wrist caused him to end his summer prematurely. He was named an Aflac All-American during the summer of 2006 for his success as a high school player, and drew comparisons to Kirby Puckett even back then for his shorter, stocky stature and sparkplug approach. He may profile in a more similar fashion to Shannon Stewart as an exciting offensive performer that profiles best at one of the top three spots of the lineup. He has good speed and surprising power, giving him 20/20 potential. While he has good bat speed and can crush the best fastballs, he struggles to recognize breaking pitches, although at the same time he does work counts and knows how to get on base via the free pass. Defensively he's a 'tweener that fits best in left field due to less than ideal arm strength and instincts. Posts: 13299 June 5, 2009 9:03 PM Graphic Artist / Dir of Amateur Baseball Ops	ROUND 1S-b: Kyle Heckathorn - RHP- SIGNED 6'6", 240, R/R, Kennesaw State University (Georgia) BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Heckathorn is built tall and stronger, taller and thicker than Eric Arnett, although his delivery isn't as smooth. You can pretty much guess what kind of pitcher he is just by looking at him, as he's all about power. His fastball has touched 99 in the past, and he has worked comfortably in the mid-90s as a starter during his career at Kennesaw State. This year he has tried his best to improve his fastball command, which caused him to sacrifice some velocity, working more in the upper-80s to low-90s. The same can be said for his slider, a true power pitch that he can throw in the upper-80s, but a pitch that he commands better in the low-80s. Whether or not he can find that happy balance remains to be seen, but clearly the Brewers are excited about his power arm and body to take him so early in the draft, as few pitchers eligible for the 2009 draft have Heckathorn's upside. Many have him pegged for the bullpen as a prototypical late-game, short-inning reliever in the mold of Jonathan Broxton. While he led his team to the state championship as both a pitcher and as a hitter, his future as a pro lies as a hitter. He employs a short, compact stroke to muscle balls to right field, with good loft to his swing. His power comes thanks to very good hand-eye coordination and strong hands and wrists. While he doesn't have the same kind of speed, his size and potential at the plate makes him somewhat of a similar prospect to Kentrail Davis, both shorter yet powerful left-handed hitters that continually put up big numbers at the plate. His prowess as a left-handed pitcher means he has a very good outfield, making him a perfect fit for right field. His offensive promise, thanks to his power, is higher than Caleb Gindl and Erik Komatsu, but overall he profiles in a similar fashion. He excels at certain parts of his game, showing good quickness behind the plate and overall technique, but inconsistent reports have arose about his throwing arm and accuracy. He has a quick release, and plenty of experience behind the plate, catching some of the best players in the nation participating in notable showcase events and playing for Team USA last summer. At the plate he has impressive power potential, but it remains to be seen how well he will hit for average. He has good bat speed and extension, but his swing can get long at times. His bat and defense are pretty much where you would expect them to be for a high school player, giving the Brewers plenty of time and patience to develop both. Like most catchers, he isn't the most fleet afoot on the basepaths. Posts: 13302 June 5, 2009 9:05 PM Graphic Artist / Dir of Amateur Baseball Ops	ROUND 3: Joshua Prince - SS - SIGNED 6'0", 195, R/R, Tulane (Louisiana) BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Prince was one of the top prospects last summer playing for the Green Bay Bullfrogs in the Northwoods League, and recorded the fastest 60-yard dash time as part of the league's all-star game's pre-game scouting event, clocking in at 6.60 seconds. He has solid tools across the board, with bat speed, defense and some power to go along with his larger shortstop build. Despite his size, he moves well at the shortstop position, and is the type of athlete that makes everything he does look easy, gracefully moving to both his right and left. He started his college career at Texas before transferring to Tulane for his sophomore year, and was originally lauded by the Longhorns for his defensive prowess. There has always been promise in his bat, and he started to show that promise last summer in the Northwoods League, leading the league in triples while crushing a home run in the all-star game, and has continued that success during his junior year, ranking among the national leaders in stolen bases. His bat is still in question, and while he has good tools across the board, none are great. Hanna High School (South Carolina) BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Hall is a tall and projectable right-handed pitcher who is just starting to scratch the surface of his potential. He has spent the first few years in high school known more for his abilities as a shortstop/third baseman, with good athleticism for his size, a strong arm and interesting potential at the plate. If he honors his commitment to South Carolina, he likely would be used both as a hitter and as a pitcher, but at the pro level he will continued to be groomed on the mound. His velocity continues to get better, going from the 88-91 range last year to sitting in the low-90s this year touching 95 frequently. He also has an improving slider and a changeup, giving him three solid pitches. His arm action is incredibly loose, and he throws the ball effortlessly, meaning he should be able to maintain his improved velocity as his body continues to fill out and also deep in ballgames. His fastball also shows very good natural late movement to it, and despite being shut down this spring due to some tightness in his forearm, which probably isn't a reason for concern if the Brewers drafted him in the fourth round, his mechanics are considered clean. He oozes with tools, with a great combination of speed, power potential and arm strength. His time on the baseball field has been limited given his two-sport career, serving as the backup quarterback for the Seminoles. He did play during his freshman year, and started his junior year with regular playing time. After starting the year slow, his playing time diminished, but the talent is there for him to succeed with regular playing time in the minor leagues. He profiles as a centerfielder with the speed to cover a lot of ground in the outfield with more than enough arm to handle right field if needed. With good bat speed and natural strength, he could also be a force at the plate, and a threat on the basepaths. With any two-sport star that hasn't fully committed to baseball, he will need plenty of time to refine his game, as his overall potential is nearly limitless, but it's matter of him putting it all together. However, he does win people over with an absolutely fearless and tenacious approach on the mound. He never gives into a situation, and has never faced a situation that he has back down from. He opened the season vs. Stephen Strasburg and San Diego State as part of the MLB Urban Youth Academy classic in San Diego, and recently shut down perennial powerhouse Miami over six innings of work. He typically pitches in the upper-80s, and has a good, not great, three pitch mix. His approach allows him to strike out more batters than his stuff would normally dictate, but that also causes him to get hit hard as he challenges batters more often than most. Posts: 13306 June 5, 2009 9:06 PM Graphic Artist / Dir of Amateur Baseball Ops	ROUND 7: Khristopher Davis - OF - SIGNED 6'0", 195, R/R, Cal State-Fullerton (California) BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Davis arrived at Cal State Fullerton with pretty big expectations. He was a talented two-way star in high school that was considered to be a potential early round pick, and it was thought that he would make immediate contributions in the Titans' lineup and possibly on the mound as well. He never took the mound for Fullerton, and he also struggled during both of his freshman and sophomore years. He made some key adjustments this season, particularly toning down his swing with two strikes, and had a big season at the plate for the Titans, drastically improving his draft stock. He is a toolsy outfielder with big power potential, but an average at best arm will limit him to left field. He has an equally big swing, and will need to continue to do a better job managing the strike zone and shortening his swing when he needs to. He's a very good athlete overall with good speed, and profiles in a similar fashion to former big-leaguer Ron Gant. He has similar tools to Pence as well, with an unorthodox approach and an interesting blend of power and speed. He enjoyed a fine season at the plate this past spring, hitting .370 with 12 doubles, five triples and six home runs. He also showed a disciplined eye, walking 29 times in 173 at-bats. He has committed to play for LSU for the 2009-10 calendar year, but being selected this high he likely signs with the Brewers. Posts: 13308 June 5, 2009 9:06 PM Graphic Artist / Dir of Amateur Baseball Ops	ROUND 9: Jonathan Pokorny - LHP - SIGNED 6'2", 220, R/L, Kent State University (Ohio) BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: Pokorny is a lefty that was used predominantly as a reliever during his college career at Kent State, splitting time in the closer role the past two years, although he made eight starts last summer for the Alaska Goldpanners in the Alaskan Collegiate League. He has a knack for missing bats, with 124 strikeouts in just over 97 career innings of work, allowing only six home runs in that time. With only 97 college innings under his belt, his arm has relatively low miles on it, and could move quickly through the lower levels of the minor leagues if he continues to be groomed as a starter. Similar to Steve Hammond a few years ago, the Brewers may opt to try him as a starter, as he has a decent three-pitcher reportoire, including a upper-80s fastball that has touched the low-90s, to succeed in such a role. He shows good footwork behind the plate, sets up well, and calls a good game. With a strong, athletic build, he also shows power in his swing, although his offensive game overall needs some work. There is potential there to get better at the plate, but he's going to need plenty of reps in the minors to get there. He is built tall and strong with long limbs and has good stuff. He can run his fastball up to 95 mph, and works comfortably in the low-90s. He has also shown a good cutter that acts as a slider, and this year has started to show more confidence in his changeup. Prior to this year he struggled with control, which forced him to leave his fastball, which doesn't have much movement, down the center of the plate leading to him getting hit hard. This year he worked harder on taking a little off of his stuff to improve his command. He still has work to do, but has the talent to be a sleeper if he's able to put everything together as a pro. Similar to Lamontagne, Currie struggled with command prior to this year, but seemed to respond well to a move to the bullpen. He has a good enough repertoire to be moved back to the starting rotation, with an upper-80s to low-90s fastball, a mid-70s curveball and a fairly advanced upper-70s changeup. He came to Alabama as one of the state's most decorated two-way talents, and spent more time during his first few years in college swinging the bat and playing the outfield. He has always had a special arm, and started to show how special it can be last summer. His season this year was delayed due to mono, but when he did take the mound he create quite a stir by pitching consistently in the low-90s touching 94-95 on occasion. He also throws a hard slider and a good changeup, giving him three solid to above average offerings. He seemed to hit the wall late in the season, which may have caused him to slide in the draft. Overall he's a good athlete with a tall, lean and wiry strong body that would be able to hold is own as a hitter as a NL pitcher. If the Brewers can get him signed, since it could take early round money, he could be one of the steals of the draft if he's able to continue his success as a pro. Posts: 13315 June 5, 2009 9:31 PM Graphic Artist / Dir of Amateur Baseball Ops	ROUND 16: Ryan Gennett - SS- SIGNED 5'9", 164, L/R, Sarasota High School (Florida) BREWERFAN.NET SCOUTING REPORT: As a left-handed hitter Gennett is one of the best pure hitters with one of the better approaches of any prep player eligible for the 2009 draft. He doesn't have the greatest size, and may not have the range to stick at shortstop, but he is an athletic player that has very good speed as well as a very strong arm. He handles himself very well at second base, and third base could also be an option given his offensive potential and arm strength. Gennett's pitch recognition is uncommon for a high school senior, as he exhibits an incredibly polished approach at the plate. He has very good bat speed and can turn on the best of fastballs, and he performed well on the showcase circuit during the summer of 2008, including his participation in the Aflac All-American Classic. Despite his smaller frame, he has good power potential, and should hit plenty of doubles and triples as well. He had somewhat of a down senior year, which caused scouts to wonder if he may be better off going to college. If he does take his talents to Florida State we may be talking about him as a first-rounder for the 2012 draft. He has some upside as a hitter as well, with a tall and projectable frame. He's a young player, only coming off of his freshman year, and may be motivated to return to school next year to improve his standing.
