Lead off htting infielder that seems to have lost his starting job, and is signed through next year at about $9M (too much?), so I assume the Red Sox would be
happy to get rid of much of the contract. Not a young man anymore. Not sure I'm crazy about th idea, but interesetd in others' thoughts.

He's Counsell without the versatility and a huge contract. BOS may well waive him, or end up trading him for another terrible deal.

With Lowell hurt, Lowrie suffering a setback, and Nick Green . . . still Nick Green, the Sox could use a 3rd baseman that also has the versatility to play SS and CF (when Rocco and JD Drew are your backups, fragility becomes a concern). Lugo's defense, in particular, has been really frustrating this year, and I think most fans would be glad to see him leave. The contracts would be about a wash also . . . |

MLB Trade Rumors has a blurb that the Red Sox are "desperately trying to move Lugo" to clear a roster spot for some of their guys returning soon
(Lowell, etc). I wonder if Melvin will at least inquire. I was surprised when I looked up his stats, hearing about what a bad year he's having, but
he's hitting above .280 and has an OBP over .350. I know his defense has been subpar this year, but maybe a change of scenery would help.

I'm sure BOS would give him away if someone would pay his salary. MIL does not need a SS, and does not need to add payroll. He doesn't even have the
ability to play other spots like Hall does.

So he couldn't even fill in at 2B if Counsell/McGehee can't play there every day?

He's played 84 games at 2B and 16 at 3B, so he "can" play there, but as Escobar showed, not all SS can easily play 2B without some growing pains.
Defensively, I'd prefer Hall, and Lugo costs even more. I just don't see the upside.

Plus, Lugo is an unsavory character. I don't mind having a few of those on the team per se, but when he's also not an upgrade, I say pass.

The Sox are trying to move Lugo to open a roster spot. Trading Lugo for Hall doesn't accomplish that.

But why? Counsell & McGehee have played well, & we're stuck with Hall. What would be negligent about Melvin not bothering with Lugo? He can't
create a 25-man roster spot without eating the rest of Hall's contract. Hall & Lugo are similar enough that it's not even worth Melvin's
efforts to explore replacing one with the other.
